Why is this site so ugly?

I don’t see it as ugly. I see it as raw, pure, unadorned by gimmickry. There’s nothing here but HTML and a few lines of CSS. No fonts, no spyware, no overused JavaScript. Just you and the text.

It’s the WWW version of Egyptian and Byzantine art, with the austere beauty of a desert landscape.
